19 and wondering if my gynecologist was too quick to dismiss (worried about endometriosis)?

I would try out the birth control first, before jumping to conclusions. Other things can cause painful periods, such as ovarian cysts, and if thats the case the birth control should take care of them. If the discomfort continues though, I would at least give your doctor a call to see if your symptoms warrant another visit.
