1960s or the New Millennium?

I'm writing a story and I'm torn. I don't know whether I should base in the 1960s, Motown the civil rights, black panthers, hippies, styles, lingo etc or today's music, movies, styles, trends, politics, etc. What would you be more interested in reading about and watching in a movie?
