Acer aspiree 5536 problem?

hey guys, i need to change my battery but havent got around to it yet. However now a new problem has started whereby the charger will flick on and off sometimes not charging it. The green light is on the charger? and when i take the battery out and run on mains the problem is still there. Dud charger or expensive mother board problem? help appreciated.
