Where were we before we were born?

I have been thinking about this question for some time now and it is quite mind-boggling. It is like the opposite of saying where will we go after we die? The universe is estimated to be billions and billions of years old. There is so much history between that time and the time that we officially became existent in our mother's womb. All the events that changed the course of the world happened while we were nonexistent. Where were we before we were born? We have no recollection of anything before that moment. Obviously we did not exist before we were born but our soul had to be somewhere right? Maybe we did live in another time as a human or even another organism on another planet! Maybe when we died we lost all memory of that life and then got another chance to be part of this life. I dont know. It is clearly impossible to come up with the right answer but I just cant help thinking about it! I would love to hear some of your thoughts, but please refrain from religious ideals.
